Former President Obasanjo Calls for Imprisonment of Corrupt Politicians
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has expressed deep concern over the high levels of corruption among Nigerian politicians, calling for the imprisonment of those responsible for their criminal behavior.
Obasanjo, who served as Nigeria’s first democratically elected Head of State from 1999 to 2007, emphasized the need for accountability in government. He highlighted the prevalence of dishonesty and unethical conduct among political officeholders, stating that some individuals should be behind bars for their past actions.
During a virtual memorial lecture in Lagos State, titled ‘The Imperative for Moral Rectitude in Governance,’ Obasanjo recounted a shocking encounter with a politician who justified his false statements as part of “politics.”
He emphasized the importance of transformational leadership and integrity in Nigeria, calling for a shift towards truth, honesty, and inclusion in government.
The memorial lecture, organized by the Old Boys’ Association of St. Finbarr’s College, honored the late missionary Denis Slattery, who was recognized for his contributions to education and sports in Nigeria.
