Police were called to a home in Burns Street, Hillston, 100km north-west of Griffith, at about 2.30am.
They were told the 46-year-old man and two women, aged 31 and 56, were in the home when three people entered, one carrying a gun.
The 46-year-old was shot twice in the abdomen before the intruders left.
He was taken to Griffith Hospital before being airlifted to a major city hospital in a critical condition with life-threatening injuries.
An investigation is underway.
