European governments are being criticized by the head of the International Energy Agency (IEA) for not adequately supporting Ukraine’s energy sector before winter. Russia has targeted Ukraine’s electricity infrastructure with multiple attacks, resulting in a significant electricity shortage. The IEA report warns of a 6-gigawatt shortage this winter, impacting essential services like hospitals and schools. Despite this, Europe has been hesitant in providing additional electricity to Ukraine. The EU has pledged 160 million euros to improve Ukraine’s resilience against Russian attacks and support humanitarian and energy infrastructure needs. Additionally, windfall profits from frozen Russian assets will fund Ukraine’s reconstruction and defense. European consumers are encouraged to reduce electricity demand to aid Ukraine. EU President Ursula von der Leyen will meet with President Zelensky to discuss the allocation of EU funds. The UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission cites blackouts caused by Russian attacks as a reason for Ukrainians leaving the country. The urgency of supporting Ukraine’s energy security is paramount to prevent a crisis this winter.
