Defense Minister Nikos Dendias announced Greece’s plan to procure a fourth Belharra-type frigate, part of a comprehensive modernization program for the Hellenic Navy. The announcement was made during the launch ceremony for the Nearchos frigate at the Naval Group shipyards in Lorient, France. The modernization program includes upgrades to Belharra frigates, MEKO frigates, Roussen-class missile boats, submarines, and the acquisition of Island-class patrol boats. Greece will also contribute to the design and construction of the new Constellation frigate and participate in the European corvette program. Dendias emphasized the creation of an “impregnable surface wall” in the Aegean through these initiatives.
