The government is likely to extend the existing import management system for certain IT hardware products like laptops and tablets for three months, with a review deadline set for September 30. These imports totaled $8.4 billion in 2023-24 against an authorization of $9.5 billion, with the majority coming from China.
In August 2023, import restrictions were imposed on laptops, tablets, and other IT hardware products, followed by the rollout of an import management system in October of the same year. This system aims to monitor inbound shipments without disrupting market supply.
Importers can apply for multiple authorizations valid until September 30, 2024, allowing for multiple consignments. The system has already cleared over 100 applications from companies like Apple, Dell, and Lenovo, seeking permission for imports worth nearly USD 10 billion.
The extension of this system ensures a smooth import process without disruptions in the current year, maintaining a trusted supply chain for IT products in India. Personal computer imports totaled $5.33 billion in 2022-23, down from $7.37 billion in 2021-22.
