Displaced Flood Victims Protest in Maiduguri, Urged to Remain Calm
In Maiduguri, Borno State, hundreds of flood victims took to the streets in protest today, demanding food and relief items following the devastating flood on September 9, 2024. The flood displaced over a million residents and left many without basic necessities.
The protesters, mainly from the Baga Road area, blocked traffic to express their frustration over the perceived neglect in relief assistance. Commissioner of Police, CP Mohammed Lawal Yusufu, intervened, urging the displaced victims to remain patient. He assured them that the government, in collaboration with NEMA and SEMA, has implemented essential relief measures.
Efforts to assist the displaced victims are underway, with token cards issued for government-distributed palliatives. The government, along with humanitarian organizations, is providing food, shelter, and clean water. Evacuation to temporary shelters is ongoing, with around 50,000 people relocated.
The flash floods in Maiduguri have affected over 239,000 people, destroying critical infrastructure and disrupting access to essential services. The United Nations reports a food and nutrition crisis for 4.8 million people in Borno, Adamawa, and Yobe states. The situation remains precarious, with heightened risks of disease outbreaks in overcrowded IDP camps.
The call for calm from CP Yusufu underscores the importance of unity and perseverance in the face of adversity.
