Transforming Turkmenistan’s Railways: A Vision for the Future

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) and Turkmenistan Railways Agency are embarking on a transformative journey with the Trans-Turkmenistan Railway Modernization Project. This ambitious project involves modernizing and electrifying a 1,147-km railway line, linking key cities from Turkmenabat to Turkmenbashi. ADB’s Country Director for Turkmenistan, Artur Andrysiak, highlighted the project’s significance in enhancing regional connectivity and boosting Turkmenistan’s strategic positioning in international trade.

Phase 1 of the project, set for completion by 2025, will revamp the section between Ashgabat and Dushak. Subsequent phases will focus on electrification and modernization, contributing to decarbonizing Turkmenistan’s rail network. Additionally, ADB is prioritizing green and energy-efficient projects, aiming to support Turkmenistan’s transition to a more sustainable and climate-resilient economy.

Furthermore, ADB’s initiatives extend to enhancing SME competitiveness and improving healthcare education in Turkmenistan. By investing in infrastructure, innovation, and human capital, ADB is committed to driving economic growth and development in Turkmenistan.
