Attica governor raises concerns about flood readiness

Attica Governor Nikos Hardalias raised concerns about the region’s flood preparedness during an inspection of the Marathon stream in East Attica. The area had previously suffered damage from a wildfire in August, prompting the need for better flood measures ahead of winter.

Hardalias acknowledged progress in cleaning 38 streams in East Attica but admitted that more work is needed. Bureaucratic challenges were highlighted, with confusion over authority responsibilities for stream maintenance.

Addressing the need for legal tools and sufficient funding, Hardalias emphasized the importance of immediate solutions to prevent blockages and flooding risks. He urged an end to passing responsibility and emphasized the constitutional obligation to protect human life, property, and the environment.

The ongoing efforts to clean streams aim to cover more ground by the end of October, but the task is described as complex and ongoing. Hardalias stressed the need for effective government initiatives backed by financial support to ensure the region’s resilience against potential floods.
