In an interview with Kathimerini, Steven Cook from the Council on Foreign Relations urges the United States to take a firmer stance on Turkey and not underestimate the growing anti-American sentiment in the country. He points out that both the Erdogan government and other parties foster anti-Americanism, using it for political gain.
Cook emphasizes the need for Washington to pressure Ankara by halting the sale of F-35 fighter jets and delaying the delivery of F-16 warplanes. He highlights the persistent denial among US officials regarding the extent of anti-Americanism in Turkey and the government’s encouragement of such sentiments.
Despite Turkish support for Hamas and efforts to reopen discussions on the F-35 program, Cook recommends a tougher approach, imposing consequences for Turkey’s actions. He suggests isolating Turkey within NATO if it joins the BRICS group, emphasizing the need for the US to address these behaviors firmly.
