US Denies Offer to Recognize Houthis in Yemen, Explores Options to Increase Pressure on Rebels
A top US diplomat refuted claims by Yemen’s Houthis regarding an alleged offer from the Biden administration to recognize the Iran-backed rebels if they ceased attacks in the Red Sea and beyond. Special envoy Tim Lenderking also expressed concerns about evidence indicating Russia’s efforts to arm the Houthis.
Speaking alongside Yemen’s ambassador Mohammed Al Hadhrami, Lenderking dismissed the notion of recognizing the Houthis as a legitimate government. Emphasizing support for the legitimate Yemeni government, the envoy outlined measures to increase pressure on the rebels, including redesignating them as a terrorist organization.
The Houthis, currently engaged in a decade-long civil war, have targeted Red Sea shipping and launched attacks against Israel, prompting international concern. While the US initially delisted the group as terrorists to aid humanitarian efforts, a partial reversal in designation is now under consideration.
Amid escalating tensions, the envoy highlighted Russia’s role in bolstering the Houthis, posing further challenges to regional stability. Both Lenderking and Al Hadhrami underscored the necessity of a ceasefire in Gaza to address security threats in the Red Sea region.
