In Sudan, relentless violence has caused immense devastation, with large-scale fighting escalating around the only capital in Darfur not held by paramilitary forces, according to the UN’s top humanitarian official, Joyce Msuya. Famine has already hit Zamzam camp near Al-Fashir, and Msuya stressed the urgent need for a significant humanitarian operation to prevent further loss of life.
The conflict in Sudan began in mid-April 2023, resulting in thousands of casualties. Msuya urged the UN Security Council to demand the protection of civilians and allow unrestricted delivery of aid to those in need. The dark history of genocide in Darfur has resurfaced, prompting concerns of war crimes and crimes against humanity.
Despite resolutions calling for an end to fighting, both sides have continued to escalate violence, leading to dire conditions especially in Al-Fashir and surrounding regions. Famine has been confirmed in Zamzam camp, with a significant portion of the population facing acute food insecurity.
As the UN works to provide aid in the midst of conflict and flooding, Msuya emphasized the critical importance of de-escalation and access to vulnerable populations. Without immediate action, the humanitarian crisis in Sudan is likely to worsen, particularly in areas like Zamzam and other regions in desperate need of assistance.
