The U.N. committee has accused Israel of committing severe breaches of a global treaty protecting children’s rights in Gaza, leading to catastrophic impacts and among the worst violations in recent history. Over 41,000 people have been killed in Gaza since Israel’s military campaign began, with 11,355 of them being children. The Vice Chair of the Committee described the deaths of children as historically unique and extremely grave violations.
Israel’s delegation argued that the treaty did not apply in Gaza or the West Bank and claimed to target Hamas members, not civilians. However, the U.N. Committee monitors compliance with the Convention on the Rights of the Child, aiming to protect children from violence and abuses.
9 more deaths
On the same day as the U.N. accusations, Israel killed nine more children in Gaza through airstrikes that also resulted in the deaths of 34 Palestinians. The ongoing Israeli strikes in various areas of the Gaza Strip have raised concerns about the escalating violence in the region.
