Spain poised to lead EU in hydrogen, predicts Rystad Energy

Spain Leading the Way in Green Hydrogen Revolution

Spain is emerging as a frontrunner in the green hydrogen revolution, leveraging its expertise in renewable energy to dominate the industry. With over 50% of electricity generated from renewable sources, the country aims to achieve 11 GW of installed electrolyzer capacity by 2030, the highest target in the EU.

To reach this goal, Spain requires additional support through subsidy programs. While on track to reach 5 GW by 2030, the nation’s progress falls short of the target. However, with optimal conditions for renewable energy and robust government policies, Spain remains cost-effective for green hydrogen production.

Recent projects like the Puertollano green hydrogen plant exemplify Spain’s commitment to the sector, signaling promising growth in the next decade. Significant government support and funding initiatives, including a €2.3 billion subsidy package, position Spain as a key player in the global hydrogen market.

As Spain competes with major European counterparts like Germany and France in the hydrogen industry, its strategic investments and ambitious targets set it apart as a leader in sustainable energy innovation.
