Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis recently announced on social media that Greece’s procurement of a fourth Belharra frigate will not affect the country’s fiscal stability. The decision to acquire the frigate is essential to bolster the nation’s defenses, with Mitsotakis emphasizing that the defense of the homeland is a top priority.
Defense Minister Nikos Dendias confirmed Greece’s intention to purchase the fourth frigate during a visit to the Lorient shipyards in France. The option to order an additional frigate at the same price as the previous ones was retained by Athens after signing a contract for the first three in March 2021.
Despite the official deadline passing in June 2023, Greece’s strong relationship with France facilitated the exercise of the option almost a year later. The fourth frigate will contribute to Greece’s growing strength and security, solidifying its position in the region.
