Pakistan’s UN Ambassador Munir Akram issued a warning at the UN Security Council regarding the growing threat of terrorism from Afghanistan. He highlighted the emergence of Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) as an umbrella organization that could lead to regional destabilization.
The banned TTP, in alignment with the Afghan Taliban, has intensified attacks on Pakistani security forces post-breaking a ceasefire agreement in November 2022. Ambassador Akram emphasized the global impact of TTP’s terrorism at the Security Council meeting on Afghanistan’s situation.
Ambassador Akram expressed Pakistan’s readiness to collaborate with international bodies to eliminate the TTP threat while continuing national actions against the group. He condemned the Afghan interim government’s human rights violations, especially against women.
Concern for humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan
Moreover, Ambassador Akram raised concerns about Afghanistan’s ongoing humanitarian crisis and urged the international community for aid, as only 25% of required funds have been received. He emphasized the urgent need for full funding to alleviate the Afghan people’s suffering.
In addition to addressing the humanitarian crisis, Pakistan is committed to supporting Afghanistan’s economic revival through trade partnerships and infrastructure projects for regional stability and growth. Ambassador Akram stressed the importance of engaging with the Taliban with a clear direction to establish normalcy in Afghanistan.
Rise in terrorist attacks
Notably, Pakistan has faced a surge in terrorist incidents, with 59 attacks occurring in August as per the Pak Institute for Peace Studies. The attacks, orchestrated by groups like TTP and IS-K, highlight the urgent need for collaborative counter-terrorism efforts.
