The Political Dilemma: Delayed Elections in South Sudan
It has been decided that the elections in December 2024 in South Sudan will be postponed for 24 months, with the transitional period extended to February 2027. While the Council of Ministers supported this decision, the RJMEC showed some dissent, raising concerns about the extension of the transitional period.
Even though a majority of RJMEC members agreed to the extension, there is still a notable portion that did not consent. This decision will now require approval from the National Legislature, presenting a potential challenge considering the varying opinions.
The possibility of repeated delays in conducting elections calls for proactive measures to avoid a legitimacy crisis in the future. Two scenarios are proposed – either further extensions to 2029 or implementing a roadmap to end the cycle of extensions by creating caretaker governments for a smooth transition to elections.
Civil society organizations and academia are urged to contribute to this national agenda, providing valuable insights to guide the National Legislature in crafting a clear roadmap to end the extended transitional period in South Sudan.
