Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is challenging the notion that a national committee of inquiry is the only way to investigate the Hamas massacre on October 7. Attorney-General Gali Baharav-Miara disclosed this in a letter, stating that a national committee is not the sole tool for such investigations.
The attorney-general responded to the prime minister’s request for independent legal representation in a petition against him in the High Court. She highlighted that a national committee of inquiry is the most potent probe in Israel’s legal system, operating independently of the political echelon.
Baharav-Miara emphasized the importance of a national committee of inquiry in investigating the events surrounding the war and countering international investigations. Netanyahu’s proposal for a government committee with international observers was deemed insufficient.
The ongoing disagreement revolves around the prime minister’s reluctance to form a committee that could hold him accountable for the massacre. Baharav-Miara stressed the urgency of establishing a national committee to address the country’s pressing international challenges.
