After Germany’s recent border restrictions, the Dutch government led by far-right Party For Freedom (PVV) requested an asylum rule opt-out from the EU, sparking immediate response from the Commission.
Migration Minister Faber emphasized the need for control over asylum policy, a promise made during the campaign period.
The EU rejected the opt-out, citing the need for consistency among member states. It is unlikely to materialize due to legal complexities.
This action highlights the EU’s challenges with migration, as countries seek individual solutions until the adoption of a new Migration and Asylum Pact in 2026.
