The Karnataka government is considering giving preference to domicile students for admissions at University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering (UVCE) under 25% of seats filled through Joint Entrance Examination (JEE). Higher Education Minister Dr. M C Sudhakar revealed this plan after studying the model at IIT-Gandhinagar. He emphasized the need to focus on quality students and proposed allocating 10% of the JEE quota to Karnataka domicile students. The minister highlighted the importance of not only providing infrastructure but also prioritizing quality education. The government has allocated Rs 500 crore for UVCE, with Rs 100 crore released in the initial phase.
Sudhakar envisions UVCE to surpass IITs by adopting their best practices in curriculum, placement, faculty recruitment, and overall development. The government is in the process of acquiring 50 acres on the Jnanabharathi campus for UVCE’s expansion. By incorporating successful strategies from IITs, UVCE aims to become a premier educational institution in Karnataka. This initiative signifies the government’s commitment to enhancing higher education standards in the state.
