Haiti Prepares for General Elections Amid Political Turmoil
Haiti, a country plagued with political strife and violence, is taking steps towards restoring stability by setting up a provisional electoral council. This council, comprised of representatives from various groups including farmers, journalists, human rights activists, and the Vodou community, is tasked with organizing the country’s first general elections since 2016.
With the recent creation of the electoral council, Haiti aims to establish a legal framework for elections and prepare for the upcoming polls scheduled to be held by 2026. Currently consisting of seven members, the council is expected to fill the remaining two seats representing human rights groups and women’s rights organizations in the coming days.
Following the assassination of President Jovenel Moise in 2021, Haiti has been facing a power vacuum and increased control by armed gangs, particularly in the capital Port-au-Prince. The deployment of international peacekeepers, including forces from Kenya and Jamaica, underscores the urgent need to address the country’s security challenges.
