The Curfew in Martinique: A Response to Protests Over High Cost of Living

A curfew has been imposed in Martinique after intense protests erupted over the soaring cost of living in the French Caribbean island. The curfew, which is in effect from 9pm to 5am in various districts of Fort-de-France, will remain in place until at least September 23 as authorities implement additional security measures.

The protests, centered around the city’s port area, began due to outrage over skyrocketing food prices. Violent riots resulted in six police officers being injured by gunfire, with two suspects arrested in connection to the incidents. Local establishments, including a McDonald’s restaurant and Carrefour hypermarket, were damaged during the unrest.

Similar protests have occurred in Martinique and other French overseas territories in recent years, driven by frustration over the rising cost of living. According to the National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies, food prices in Martinique and other overseas territories in 2022 were 40% higher than in France.
