A former tennis coach from Co Leitrim, Sean Francis McGranaghan, has been sentenced to six and a half years in prison in the UK for multiple child sex offences. McGranaghan, who pleaded not guilty, was found guilty of attempting sexual communication with a child and attempting to incite a child to engage in sexual activity. Detectives described him as a dangerous individual and praised the significant custodial sentence he received.
McGranaghan came to the attention of police after online communication with a covert officer posing as a child. While working as a tennis coach in Ireland, he was also arrested in the UK. Despite no indication of inappropriate conduct at Sligo Tennis Club where McGranaghan coached, the club is reaching out to parents whose children attended his coaching groups. McGranaghan was given a Sexual Harm Prevention Order and will be on the Sexual Offenders Register for life.
SWROCU, the investigative unit involved, works closely with international police forces to combat online child sexual abuse and exploitation. McGranaghan’s case highlights the importance of safeguarding measures in sports clubs.
