European Parliament declares González Urrutia as President-elect of Venezuela
The European Parliament recognized Edmundo González Urrutia as the rightful winner of Venezuela’s disputed presidential elections, contrary to incumbent Nicolás Maduro’s claims. The decision, although not binding, received 309 votes in favor in Strasbourg. The declaration urges the EU to support González Urrutia’s inauguration on January 10, 2025.
This move signifies a shift as it marks the first time the European People’s Party aligned with rightwing forces instead of left-leaning parties. The Parliament calls for the release of political prisoners and international scrutiny of Maduro’s regime. González Urrutia expressed gratitude for the recognition and commitment to Venezuela’s democracy.
María Corina Machado’s leadership and the PUD’s claims of victory highlight the ongoing political turmoil in Venezuela. The EU aims to prevent a mass exodus and restore democratic stability in the region.
