Tragedy struck the Bnei Menashe community earlier this month when IDF soldier Sgt. Gideon Hanghal was killed in a terrorist attack while on duty. Hanghal, a proud member of this community descended from one of the Ten Lost Tribes, had immigrated to Israel from India just a few years prior, fulfilling his dream of defending the Land of Israel.
Despite facing obstacles and language barriers, Hanghal excelled in his military service. His untimely death has highlighted the plight of the Bnei Menashe Jews, who have preserved their Jewish identity for centuries despite exile. The community’s journey towards Israel has been marked with both progress and setbacks, with many members still waiting to immigrate.
In honor of Hanghal and his sacrifice, it is crucial for Israel to expedite the aliyah process for the remaining Bnei Menashe members in India. These individuals are an integral part of the Jewish people and deserve the opportunity to return home. Let us honor Hanghal’s memory by fulfilling the dreams of his community and reuniting families through aliyah.
The writer, founder of Shavei Israel, emphasizes the importance of bringing the Bnei Menashe home in memory of Sgt. Gideon Hanghal.
