Canada has announced further sanctions against Hamas and Israeli settlers for “extremist violence” in the West Bank. Along with Australia and the United States, Canada added five senior Iranian officials to its sanctions list for their roles in policies leading to violent protests’ repression.
The new sanctions target 11 individuals and two entities involved in Hamas’s financial network, used in planning and executing attacks on Israel on October 7, 2023. Four Israelis and organizations were also listed for participating in “harassment and violence against Palestinian communities.”
The sanctions against Iranian officials were announced to mark the two-year anniversary of Mahsa Amini’s death in Iranian custody. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau expressed concern over escalating conflicts between Israel, Iran, and other groups.
The October 7 attack resulted in the deaths of over 1,200 people on the Israeli side, with hostages still held in Gaza. Israel’s military offensive has killed over 41,000 people in Gaza, according to the territory’s health ministry.
