South Sudan Extends Transitional Period and Delays General Elections
The National Council of Ministers, chaired by President Salva Kiir, has approved the extension of the transitional period in South Sudan’s constitution. The amendment delays the upcoming general elections to February 2027, citing a lack of preparedness.
Cabinet Affairs Minister, Dr. Martin Elia Lomuro, announced that the amendment does not extend the tenure of current government officials. The Ministry of Justice is expected to present the bill to parliament for consideration.
Last week, the government postponed the December 2024 elections to December 2026. This is the second time the country has extended its transitional period since gaining independence in 2011.
The decision to delay elections has drawn criticism from Western diplomatic missions and citizens. They believe timely elections are crucial for stability, democracy, and development in South Sudan.
With the extension, South Sudan will need over US$433 million to fund the 2026 elections. The government aims to address logistical and organizational challenges to ensure successful polls in the future.
