Cultural Heritage of Azerbaijanis in Armenia: A Cry for Help
Representatives of civil society in Azerbaijan have come forward with an urgent plea to the heads of the OSCE and the Council of Europe, addressing the ongoing destruction of their cultural heritage in Armenia.
Despite being forced out of their historical homelands in Armenia 36 years ago, hundreds of thousands of Azerbaijanis still cannot return to reclaim their homes. Armenia has systematically erased the material and cultural heritage of Azerbaijanis, with only a handful of examples left intact.
This issue extends to the destruction of mosques, cemeteries, and entire neighborhoods that were once vibrant Azerbaijani communities. The situation has escalated to the point of violating international conventions and infringing on the rights of Azerbaijani refugees.
As a united front, representatives from various civil society organizations in Azerbaijan have called for the protection and restoration of their cultural heritage in Armenia. They urge the OSCE and the Council of Europe to take a firm stand against this cultural annihilation and to uphold the principles of human rights and historical preservation.
