An Alaska man, Panos Anastasiou, aged 76, has been charged for threatening to torture and kill six Supreme Court justices, as revealed by the Justice Department. Between March 2023 and July 2024, Anastasiou sent over 465 messages through the court’s website, detailing gruesome acts he wished to inflict on the justices and their families, including methods like torture, hanging, and firearms.
While the specific justices targeted were not disclosed, Anastasiou faces a total of 22 counts for making threats against a federal judge and in interstate commerce, with a potential sentence of 155 years. Despite pleading not guilty, excerpts from his messages highlight the violent and racist nature of his threats, including references to “mass assassinations” and using racial slurs.
Reportedly, Anastasiou has donated to Democratic platforms in the past, sparking discussions about ideological motivations behind the threats. U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland voiced concern over the incident, emphasizing the importance of a justice system free from fear for public officials to execute their duties effectively.
