Residents of Mpape, Abuja, are on edge after a series of earth tremors. Despite assurances from the Nigeria Geological Survey Agency that the tremors are low-risk, some residents are choosing to evacuate. The Director General stated that over 48 earthquakes were recorded, with intensity and frequency increasing from September 13th to 16th.
One resident, Tahir Usman, expressed concern for his family’s safety and plans to move to a safer location. Another resident, Mr. Halidu, echoed the sentiment of not taking chances with their lives. Residents in other affected areas such as Gishiri and Maitama also shared similar fears.
The FCT Emergency Management Department has yet to release an assessment, but Dr. Matthew Adepoju from the National Space Research and Development Agency reassured residents not to panic. The Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology, Geoffrey Nnaji, emphasized the government’s commitment to monitoring and mitigating the seismic risks in the area.
