In Karnataka, 15 protected areas, including Anshi-Dandeli and Nagarahole tiger reserve forests, are awaiting eco-sensitive zone (ESZ) notification, which serves as a buffer to protect wildlife habitats. The guidelines issued by the Union government in 2011 emphasize the importance of identifying ESZ to reduce pressure on natural environments.
Out of the 36 sanctuaries and five national parks in Karnataka, only 29 have been designated with ESZ, leaving the remaining 15, including proposed extensions, without the protective buffer zones. Despite the regulations being regulatory rather than prohibitive, stakeholders are hesitant to implement ESZ notification.
Last year, a cabinet sub-committee approved ESZ for six areas, which now await final approval and notification from the Ministry of Environment. Areas like Bhadra Tiger Reserve and Shettihalli Wildlife Sanctuary, along with newly declared sanctuaries, are still without ESZ protection. The urgency lies in convincing stakeholders and obtaining necessary approvals to safeguard these vital ecosystems.
