The ‘Yoon Suk-yeol Gate’ continues to stir controversy as the National Assembly passed two special prosecutor bills related to the Yoon Suk-yeol administration on October 19. The bills, known as the ‘Kim Geun-hee Special Prosecutor Bill’ and the ‘Chae Sangbyung Special Prosecutor Bill,’ were supported by members of the ruling Democratic Party as well as three lawmakers from the Reform Party.
Interestingly, lawmakers from the Justice Party, including party leader Cho Kuk and floor leader Hwang Eun-ha, boycotted the vote, signaling a split within the party. Despite their absence, both bills passed with overwhelming support from the majority of lawmakers present.
The passing of these bills underscores the deepening political divide in South Korea, as parties jockey for power ahead of the upcoming by-election in Yeonggwang County. With allegations of interference in the candidate selection process in the air, tensions are running high as parties position themselves for a crucial electoral battle in the region.
