UN member states voted to demand an end to the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories within 12 months and impose sanctions for non-compliance. This move comes just before the General Assembly, with Arab countries calling for the session. The resolution also coincides with the one-year anniversary of Israel’s war on Gaza. It demands Israel’s withdrawal within 12 months and calls for an end to new settlements and arms provisions to Israel.
The US, along with a few other countries, opposed the resolution, citing concerns about Hamas’s influence in Gaza. The General Assembly’s support for Palestinian rights has been significant, despite Security Council obstructions.
Human Rights Watch urged Israel to heed the demand of the majority of UN member states. The resolution aims to pressure Israel to change its behavior and address the humanitarian crisis in the Palestinian territories.
