UN member states are gearing up to vote on a resolution put forth by the Palestinians, calling for an end to the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories within 12 months. The draft resolution, based on an advisory opinion from the International Court of Justice, deems Israel’s occupation since 1967 as “unlawful”. The resolution demands Israel withdraw its forces, halt new settlements, and allow for the return of displaced Palestinians.
Amidst strong opposition from Israel, the draft resolution also requests states to cease arms provisions to Israel if there are suspicions of their use in the occupied territories. The proposal, if adopted, would not be legally binding but carries symbolic significance. Palestinian Ambassador to the UN Riyad Mansour believes the resolution can pressure Israel to change its behavior.
The US and Israel have criticized the resolution as inflammatory and unhelpful for peace efforts. With the General Assembly lacking veto power, it remains to be seen how the resolution will impact the ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestine.
