UN Urges Immediate Action to Halt Escalation in Lebanon and Syria
The UN human rights chief, Volker Turk, has called for immediate action to prevent further escalation after simultaneous pager explosions in Lebanon and Syria. The explosions resulted in the deaths of at least 12 people, including two children, and left thousands injured.
Turk emphasized the need for all states with influence to intervene and prevent the conflicts from widening. He stressed the importance of protecting civilians and maintaining peace and security in the region.
He urged leaders to prioritize de-escalation and conduct transparent investigations into the mass explosions. Turk condemned the attacks on civilians and armed group members, highlighting the violations of international human rights and humanitarian laws.
The explosions occurred amid heightened tensions in the region, including cross-border attacks between Hezbollah and Israel. The UN is calling for accountability for those responsible for the attacks and the protection of civilian lives.
