UN extends transitional period with regret and disappointment: Haysom

The United Nations Calls for Urgency in South Sudan’s Transition

The Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) expressed regret and disappointment as the UN endorsed the extension of the transitional period in the country. Nicholas Haysom emphasized the need for urgent action to pave the way for credible and peaceful elections.

Haysom highlighted the lack of progress in meeting the necessary conditions for free and fair elections, stressing the importance of restoring confidence in the process. He urged South Sudanese leaders to take responsibility for the delays and failures in the transition period.

The UNMISS Chief emphasized the importance of political will and the need to prioritize the nation’s interests. He called for the rebuilding of public trust and the inclusion of all voices in the peace process to break the cycle of continuous transitions.

Haysom concluded by stating the United Nations’ readiness to support South Sudan’s transitional process and collaborate with partners like IGAD and the African Union to achieve sustainable peace in the region.
