Switzerland to Host International Ukraine Mine Action Conference in October

The Swiss government will host the “Ukraine Mine Action Conference (UMAC2024)” in Lausanne on Oct 17 and 18, in partnership with Ukraine. The conference will address the extensive contamination from explosive remnants of war (ERW) and highlight the crucial role of humanitarian demining in Ukraine’s recovery.

Due to conflicts in 2014 and 2022, Ukraine is heavily landmine and ERW contaminated, affecting nearly a quarter of its territory. Switzerland, known for its neutrality and commitment to humanitarian efforts, has been a key supporter of global demining initiatives for over three decades, providing political and financial aid to over 20 countries.

UMAC2024 will focus on three main areas: people, partners, and progress. The high-level seminar on Oct. 17 will feature discussions led by Switzerland’s President and FDFA head. The following day will delve into technical discussions led by international experts, emphasizing safer and more effective mine clearance methods.

The conference aims to strengthen dialogue between Ukraine and its partners in mine action, building on previous conferences and workshops. Switzerland’s support for demining projects in Ukraine underscores its dedication to humanitarian efforts and peace-building initiatives.
