President Cyril Ramaphosa has asked Business Unity South Africa to submit proposals regarding concerns with the National Health Insurance (NHI) system. After meeting with the lobby’s leadership, Ramaphosa requested specific proposals on remaining issues of concern, stating that the government is committed to engaging in good faith with all stakeholders for health-care reform.
BUSA has criticized the NHI plan as unaffordable, unconstitutional, and damaging to the country’s health-care sector and economy. The NHI Act, signed into law shortly before the May 29 elections, aims to address South Africa’s health system challenges and ensure equitable access to treatment while limiting the private sector’s ability to insure covered treatment.
