Russia and Iran Strengthening Strategic Partnership
Russian President Vladimir Putin has given the green light to a proposal by the country’s foreign ministry to sign a strategic partnership agreement with Iran. The decree, issued on Wednesday, emphasized the importance of the agreement without specifying a timeline for its completion.
The move comes after Russia’s Security Council Secretary, Sergei Shoigu, visited Tehran and met with Iranian officials, including President Masoud Pezeshkian. Pezeshkian expressed his commitment to expanding Russian-Iranian relations to counteract sanctions imposed on both countries.
This partnership builds on a previous agreement signed in 2001 and extended until 2026. Negotiations for a new long-term agreement began under President Hassan Rouhani and were further developed during a visit by President Ebrahim Raeisi in 2022.
Putin and Pezeshkian are expected to meet during the upcoming BRICS summit in Kazan, with hopes of finalizing a comprehensive cooperation agreement between the two nations. Russia’s Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov, has also stated plans to conclude a similar agreement with Iran in the near future, following a successful partnership agreement with China in 2021.
