The Netherlands’ right-wing government has requested an opt-out on EU migration rules in order to tighten restrictions on unwanted arrivals. Migration Minister Marjolein Faber announced the request on social media, stating the need for national control over asylum policies.
The current government, led by Geert Wilders’ nationalist PVV party, intends to declare a national asylum crisis to enforce controls without parliamentary approval. The move is likely to face opposition from Brussels, which recently agreed on a new bloc-wide migration pact.
EU spokesperson Eric Mamer emphasized that opting out of adopted EU legislation is not a common practice. Despite receiving a standard number of asylum applications in 2023, the Netherlands’ asylum registration center is struggling due to years of budget cuts, leading to some individuals having to sleep outdoors.
