Self-immolation in front of an Israeli diplomatic mission in the US is a rare but extreme act of protest. On 11 September, a man named Matt Nelson set himself on fire to oppose US military support for Israel and call for an end to the ongoing assault on Gaza. This was the third known instance of self-immolation in protest of Israel’s actions.
Nelson’s act was a desperate plea to stop the genocide in Gaza and support the ICC indictment of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Despite bystanders trying to save him, Nelson suffered critical burns and was rushed to the hospital.
Self-immolation has historically been used as a powerful form of political protest, with examples like the monk in 1963 and Tunisian fruit vendor Mohamed Bouazizi in 2010. However, the recent cases in the US have received relatively little media coverage.
