In a recent statement, Roman Kostenko, the secretary of Ukraine’s parliamentary defense committee, refuted The Wall Street Journal’s claim that 80,000 Ukrainian soldiers had died in the war with Russia, calling the numbers “exaggerated.” While the U.S. outlet reported that Ukraine had suffered 80,000 soldiers killed and 400,000 wounded, Kostenko believes these figures are inflated.
President Volodymyr Zelensky had previously stated that 31,000 Ukrainian troops had been killed, but Kostenko suggested that the actual number may be closer to 50,000. Despite the staggering losses, Ukraine remains committed to defending itself, with plans to replenish its military ranks through new legislation on mobilization.
The ongoing conflict has taken a heavy toll on both sides, with casualties estimated at over 1 million. Despite the challenges, Kostenko believes that Ukraine still has the manpower to continue the fight, emphasizing the importance of enlisting more troops.
