Uganda’s Transport Minister, Gen. Edward Katumba Wamala, has announced the total closure of Karuma Bridge for the next three months starting next week. The bridge, connecting southern Uganda to the north and neighboring countries, was closed after crucial components wore out and developed cracks in April.
The decision to permanently close the bridge aims to facilitate repair works on the worn-out sections, cracks, and an entire bridge deck to ensure safety. New safety features like stronger guardrails and better lighting will also be installed during rehabilitation.
Concerns about the economic impact of the closure have been raised, but Gen. Katumba emphasizes the priority is safety. The government has added another ferry at Masindi Port to facilitate alternative routes during the closure.
Legislators from Northern Uganda have expressed concerns about the pace of rehabilitation works, with the contractor falling behind schedule. The bridge, constructed in 1962, is a vital link between regions and will be reopened by December after the completion of the 7.9 billion shillings rehabilitation contract.
With the closure, travelers will use alternative routes through national parks and other regions. The safety and efficiency of the bridge remain top priorities for the government.
