A judge recently denied a request to reduce the sentence of Wayne Wilmot, a man involved in the 1988 abduction of Janine Balding. Despite being released from prison earlier in the year under strict monitoring, Wilmot was jailed again shortly after for breaching his conditions by accessing online pornography of an extreme nature.
Despite arguing for leniency based on rehabilitation prospects under the National Disability Insurance Scheme, Wilmot’s appeal was rejected. Judge John Pickering expressed skepticism about Wilmot’s rehabilitation and the $18,000 of NDIS funds meant to assist him.
Wilmot’s history of violence, including the abduction and rape of Janine Balding, has sparked concern for public safety. His recent breach of court orders and graphic online searches raises questions about his readiness for release and the lengths society should go to rehabilitate repeat offenders.
