Improving Water Security in Azerbaijan: World Bank’s Perspective

The Country Manager for the World Bank, Stefanie Stallmeister, emphasized the significance of implementing a non-revenue water reduction program in Azerbaijan. Speaking at the presentation of the report “Transitioning to Efficient Water Sector Institutions and Programs for Addressing Water Security Challenges,” Stallmeister highlighted the importance of addressing water security challenges in the country.

She proposed the implementation of a public-private partnership mechanism to reduce non-revenue water, starting with Baku and expanding to other cities. Stallmeister also stressed the need to review tariffs and ensure that water is priced appropriately to cover production costs and maintain the system effectively.

With Azerbaijan facing a water deficit exacerbated by climate change and transboundary water resources, the collaboration between the State Agency for Water Resources, the European Union, and the World Bank aims to address these challenges and improve water security in the country.
