The European Union is taking action against Hungary for refusing to pay a fine of 200 million euros imposed by the EU’s top court for violating asylum rules. The court described Hungary’s actions as a serious infringement of EU law, prompting the EU to start clawing back funds meant for Budapest.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán criticized the ruling as outrageous, but the EU is moving forward with deducting the fine from common funds allocated to Hungary. The European Commission has also requested payment for daily fines amounting to 93 million euros.
The case against Hungary stems from changes made to its asylum system in response to the 2015 migrant crisis. The government erected fences and set up transit zones, which have since closed. Despite a previous ruling, Hungary continued to restrict access to international protection, leading to the current fines.
Asylum seekers have the right to seek protection based on threats to their safety or risk of persecution. The ongoing dispute highlights the importance of upholding EU laws on asylum and immigration.
