Hezbollah’s plot to target former defense minister and IDF chief of staff Moshe (Bogie) Ya’alon with an explosive device in Tel Aviv’s Yarkon Park was thwarted. The device, an Iranian-made Claymore mine, exploded prematurely on Rosh Hashanah morning. Two suspects were arrested, leading to indictments against eight individuals involved in the operation, with a ninth Hezbollah operative charged in absentia. The suspects were found in possession of incendiary materials and weapons, including additional explosives hidden in East Jerusalem.
Investigators discovered that the suspects had placed a camera on the device to identify Ya’alon and remotely monitor the park. The incident aimed to target an “important individual” but ultimately resulted in no casualties. The investigation revealed a complex smuggling operation involving weapons and explosives coordinated with Hezbollah operatives in Lebanon. Despite the attempt to carry out the attack, diligence from law enforcement prevented a potential tragedy.
