The Greater Equatoria Land Alliance Advocates for Land Regulations in Torit
The Greater Equatoria Land Alliance recently highlighted the lack of awareness and policies to regulate land usage in communities in Torit, the capital of Eastern Equatoria State. This concern was raised during a two-day training session for paralegals on legal basics, human rights, and handling land-related cases in the region.
Morish John, Secretary General of the Alliance, emphasized the need for clear regulations regarding land usage, citing that over 80% of community issues in Equatoria stem from land disputes. John expressed disappointment in the lack of clarity in the Land Act of 2009, leading to conflicts and even fatalities.
Paralegals in Torit echoed the sentiment, sharing experiences of conflicts arising from multiple individuals claiming the same land plots. They emphasized the importance of reporting land-related disputes to authorities and resolving issues through legal means.
In response to these challenges, the Greater Equatoria Land Alliance plans to establish paralegal committees to monitor and address land-related issues across the state. By promoting awareness and adherence to land regulations, the Alliance aims to mitigate conflicts and ensure peaceful land management in Torit and beyond.
