Florida officials are launching a criminal investigation into the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump. Gov. Ron DeSantis stated that state prosecutors will pursue the most serious charges available, including attempted murder. The investigation will run parallel to the federal probe into suspect Ryan Wesley Routh, who was initially charged with federal firearms offenses.
It is common for state and federal agencies to conduct simultaneous investigations, as each may bring charges that are unavailable at the other level. Routh, who was arrested after authorities thwarted a potential attack on Trump at a golf course, invoked his right to an attorney and no motive has been disclosed.
The FBI has interviewed Routh’s family, friends, and colleagues, seeking evidence to support their case. Routh’s attorney declined to comment after an initial court appearance, and he remains in federal custody. The incident has raised concerns about violence in American presidential politics, following a previous shooting at a campaign rally.
Federal investigators are analyzing Routh’s online activities, which suggest evolving political views and apparent disdain for Trump. The case will continue to unfold as more evidence is collected.
