Maulana Fazlur Rehman Rejects Proposed Constitutional Amendments
The government’s proposed amendments as part of a new controversial ‘Constitutional Package’ were completely rejected by JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman. The package includes amendments to the Constitution, including fixed tenure for the Chief Justice of Pakistan. Despite claiming to have the numbers for passage, the government backed out of tabling the amendments after facing resistance from JUI-F.
Efforts to engage Maulana Fazl continued, with backdoor channels being utilized. Although not tabled in parliament, the draft of the proposed amendments circulated in mainstream and social media, revealing the government’s plan for the judiciary. PTI MNA Asad Qaiser hosted a lunch for Fazl, attended by opposition leaders.
Fazl reiterated his rejection of the proposed draft, labeling it a betrayal of the country and people’s trust. Meanwhile, PML-N Senator Irfan Siddiqui downplayed Fazl’s remarks, suggesting that a consensus between JUI-F and PPP on amendments was crucial.
With multiple versions of the draft bill circulating, the government’s next steps remain uncertain as political tensions continue to rise.
