Ecuador is facing its most severe drought in over six decades, leading to scheduled power outages and curfews nationwide. The government announced daily power cuts from 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. to maintain the electrical grid, starting with maintenance on the National Transmission System and distribution networks.
Essential maintenance work will be conducted at four substation sites, with a $1.19 million investment. The government extended the power cuts to four days next week to address the ongoing energy crisis exacerbated by drought conditions.
To combat the crisis, President Daniel Noboa outlined measures such as activating power-generating ships, enhancing infrastructure, and exploring energy-saving initiatives. International analyst Luis Alberto Villamarín noted a reliance on hydroelectric production, administrative mismanagement, and interruptions in energy imports from Colombia as contributing factors to the crisis.
Authorities aim to secure new energy contracts and maintain dams to provide long-term energy stability. In response, Ecuador’s military is supporting key hydroelectric plants, and police officers are securing high-risk areas during outages.
